Since its founding in 1974, SOMIC has evolved from a specialist machine builder into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of end-of-line packaging machines. What began as a small company is today a globally operating group with over 600 employees worldwide. With headquarters in Amerang in the Bavarian Chiemgau, our manufacturing facility in Haag i. OB and branches in the USA and Thailand, we offer our customers an international presence.
Our success is based on a clear principle: we combine proven precision mechanics with state-of-the-art control and automation technology. Every SOMIC packaging machine is developed and manufactured in Germany — from the initial concept study and our in-house CNC parts production in Haag i. OB to the comprehensive final inspection using our customers' original products. Through SOMIC Packaging Asia Pacific in Bangkok, customers across the region benefit from local consultation, project coordination and ongoing service — in their time zone.

1974 - Founding of SOMIC
SOMIC was founded in the Upper Bavarian town of Vogtareuth. Initially, special-purpose machines and conveyor systems were manufactured. Packaging machines were added shortly thereafter.
1978 - Relocation to Wasserburg am Inn
Only four years later SOMIC occupies its first company-owned building in Wasserburg am Inn. Carton erectors and insertion packers are manufactured and form the foundation of SOMIC's core business.
1986 - Development of the first packaging lines
The first complete packaging lines are under development. The initial focus remains on the cheese industry, but the portfolio will soon expand into various other sectors.
1994 - Focus on end of line packaging machines
SOMIC now focuses exclusively on machines for the end-of-line packaging process. Tea, coffee, chocolate, snack products or pet food are initially the primary focus. We are continuously expanding the range of products we process.
2001 - Relocation to Amerang
A new, future-oriented corporate headquarters is being constructed in Amerang. Servo/IPC technology is being introduced into SOMIC systems. 100 employees generated revenue of approximately €10 million in FY 2000/2001.
2004 - Recipient of the "Bayern Best 50" award
SOMIC is proud to be a recipient of Bavaria's Best 50. Thanks to customer-centricity, innovation and an uncompromising commitment to quality, we hold a leading position in our market segment.
2010 - Development of the SOMIC 424
With the mechatronic machine system 424, SOMIC sets standards. Functional blocks and software-based technologies form the basis. Higher performance, greater flexibility and simpler operation are the outstanding features of this completely new, forward-looking generation of machines.
2014 - Founding of SOMIC America Inc.
40 years of SOMIC. The SOMIC Group continues to grow. SOMIC America Inc. was founded in Chicago. Our product family is also expanding - the latest development, SOMIC 232, specifically for small packages and retail units, promises more performance in a smaller footprint.
2015 - Transfer of management
Following founder Manfred Bonetsmüller's transition to an advisory role, Mr. Patrick Bonetsmüller will assume leadership of the company. He is supported by Mr. Ralf Kettner as Co-Managing Director, and by the two authorized officers, Dr. Gerhard Huber as Technical Director and Mr. Bernhard Wild as Head of Materials Management.
2015 - Expansion in Amerang
After only 14 months of construction, the new SOMIC headquarters was occupied in November 2015. The 7,000 m² facility provides ample space primarily for the technical departments.
2017 - Acquisition of SomiCon GmbH
SOMIC strategically applies its individual competencies to create premium products for the global market. With the additional expertise of SomiCon GmbH, the SOMIC Group can now also supply intelligent transport and product handling systems from a single source.
2018 - Introduction of the SOMIC ReadyPack
Standard cardboard packaging in the smallest possible footprint and at an affordable price — these are the key features of the SOMIC ReadyPack! With this compact cardboard packaging machine, SOMIC offers the perfect entry into automated packaging for prepackaged foods, pet food, health-care and other products.
2019 - Acquisition of FeinmechanikZentrum Schmidbauer
With the acquisition of FeinmechanikZentrum Schmidbauer in Haag i. Obb., SOMIC gains not only a highly specialized service provider that covers the entire range from mechanical preliminary development to production, but also 35 highly qualified employees. Through synergies, SOMIC significantly improves value creation overall and the sustainability of parts manufacturing.
2021 - The SOMIC Management

2022 - SOMIC America becomes SOMIC Packaging, Inc.
Somic America becomes SOMIC Packaging, Inc. Peter Fox is appointed CEO.
2023 - SOMIC 434 – THE DIRECT LINE TO SHELF-READY
In just 2 years of development the new SOMIC 434 machine generation was created. The new SOMIC cardboard packaging machine enables a wide range of packaging tasks to be implemented effortlessly. At the same time this new machine generation offers greater flexibility, highly efficient format changeovers and improved working conditions thanks to superior ergonomics and optimal space utilization.
2023 - Opening of SOMIC Packaging Asia Pacific Co., Ltd.
SOMIC is strengthening its global presence and opened the subsidiary SOMIC Packaging Asia Pacific Co., Ltd. in Bangkok, Thailand in December 2023. The new hub in Asia, staffed by an expert team from Sales, After Sales and Engineering, will serve as a competent contact for all end of line packaging tasks across various industries throughout the APAC region.
2023 - Collecting and grouping system SOMIC CORAS
In addition to the new SOMIC 434 machine generation, a new and forward-looking collection and grouping system was also developed. The new SOMIC CORAS system is based on planar technology and thus provides even greater flexibility and efficiency in product sorting and grouping on minimal floor space. More than 500 employees work hand in hand across four sites every day to continuously improve our machines. In fiscal year 2022/2023, revenue of €76 million was achieved.
2024 - 50 Years of SOMIC
SOMIC celebrates its 50th anniversary! Since its founding in 1974, SOMIC, based in Amerang in Upper Bavaria, has grown from a small mechanical engineering company into a world-leading provider of end-of-line packaging solutions. With innovation, quality and customer focus as guiding principles, we look back on five decades of technical milestones and continuous growth. Today, SOMIC employs around 550 people worldwide and operates at locations in Europe, the USA and Asia. Under the anniversary motto "SOMIC – Your success is our mission" we continue our success story together with our customers and shape the future of packaging technology.
2024 - Relocation of SOMIC Packaging, Inc.
To mark SOMIC Packaging, Inc.'s 10th anniversary, the US subsidiary is relocating to a new, larger facility. Located just a few minutes' drive from Eagan, the modern new site in Inver Grove Heights offers more space and ideal conditions to support ongoing growth and to continue providing our customers in North America with first-class end of line packaging solutions.
2024 - In memory of Manfred Bonetsmüller
On 10 October 2024, Manfred Bonetsmüller, founder and long-serving managing director of the SOMIC Group, died at the age of 83. With his inventive spirit and foresight, he had a lasting impact on the company and the packaging industry. His vision lives on in the philosophy "Engineered to perform – together".
